300 Nepalis trapped in Baghdad
Around three hundred Nepalis who reached Iraq lured by high-paying jobs are marooned in violence-wrecked capital Baghdad, reports Kantipur Daily.
Some 150 Nepalis from Myagdi, Nawalparasi, Chitwan, Jhapa, Syangja and Nuwakot districts who reached the war-torn country after being promised lucrative jobs by a Nepali agent working in Baghdad located Yartho Hotel and 135 more Nepalis who arrived here later to work in Global Security located in the city are not even given any lodging and proper food because of which they are forced to live in the streets with open sky as their roof nearby the highly unsafe Baghdad Airport, the daily said.
Among the stranded Nepalis one Harka Bahadur Thapa of Myagdi told Kantipur by phone that they have been given only one meal a day consisting of two breads from the past one week. He said their problem has been further compounded by the fact that there are no toilets and the Iraqi police guarding them don't even allow them to go to the nearby hotel for it.
The owner of Yartho Hotel has been saying that he won't employ the Nepali workers as per the contract until Nagendra Puri and Chiranjivi Sharma come and pay him $ 40,000 they owe to him.
After the Nepalis started to pelt stone at the hotel in rage, US army and Iraqi police rounded them up and barred their movement beyond the open street in front of the hotel.
Currently, around 40 Iraqi police are guarding the Nepalis.
"Please sir, we don't have money, we are stranded here and don't know what to do…we are dying of hunger…please rescue us," one another Nepali said calling from the same cell phone Thapa had used to call the paper. The paper said that he was crying as he was talking over the phone while confused noises accentuated with cries and hoarse scolding in Iraqi language could be heard from the background.
The victimised Nepalis said they paid upto Rs 3,00,000 to come to Iraq after the agents promised them of very high-paying jobs. They said that the Nepalis agents who had brought them here are out of contact. They have even been warned by the agents not to disclose their name and man-power agencies they work for or their throats will be slit. nepalnews.com ag July 09 08

MadDoGG bro, contact the Iraq Embassy in DC or Consulate in NYC and let them know of the dire situation our Nepali brethren are in. Once something comes about, I'd be glad to contribute financially to their cause.
Also, could we have the names of the human smugglers/coyotes/pseudo man-power agents who got them there in the first place? And, why were these laborers stupid enough to go to a place like Iraq in the first place? Damn, I pray for their safety but once they're all safely back in KTM, both the agent and the duped should all be imprisoned and ridiculed mercilessly.

well I wont stop writing to them......please dont stop too. Some of them must have sold everything to go there and some must have taken huge loans to get there so they would so hard to repay it all and still have some to provide a better life for their families. they risked their lives to go there and some SCUMB BAGS took advantage of their desperation and scammed them......THAT IS REAL SAD. I checked the world news and NADA nothing mentioned so far.........

lets put the pressure on Iraq Embassy and media so that they won't negelate those helpless Nepalis. After they are rescued, we need to go after those looteras. They are making money by playing with people's lives. I wonder what those people are made of. Do they even have hearts? Those heartless people must be penealized for their acts and the Nepali Government and media must aware innocent citizens of Nepal about these kinds of incidents.

you r doing great job MaddOGG bro. You have all my support. If there is anything I can do, let me know anytime. I will gladly participate. As far as Iraq embassy things go, I don't know how much helpful they will be but we need to find exactly what manpower agency they were in Nepal who sent them ? and how ? It's something we should put pressure on Nepal govt. Probably requesting the leading newspapers..and HUMAN RIGHT PEOPLE ( lets see how much they really care about human lives ) to put pressure on Nepal govt. to take a step at national level.
Wonder why can't the manpower agents be disclosed and punished. And why people agree to come to Iraq. That's just unfortunate.

Thanks ( * )( * ) LOL
that makes me feel real good. Atleast there are some decent human beings, I hope we will hear more about this and have the guilty put behind BARS after being tortured and their properties sold to compensate the money taken from those who got duped. AND no humanitarian agencies has responded to any of my letters and calls. Well things are looking up so lets wait and see and thanks again (dd) for the fresh news.

MadDog and others,Yesterday night I tried my best to find contact add of all the concerned parties i.e. Global Security, Yathro hotel, Nepalis Association of Man Power, and Nepalis emabssies around. I found add of Global Security and wrote immediately. In such cases its always better to contact foreign parties (than Nepalis) they are quick in response and try their best in most cases. Like I said I got prompt response but my bad :-( that was bit different. Just now I was trying to write Iraqi Police Headquarters and Baghdad Airport, and American humanitarian forces in Baghdad but got a good news that Nepal has sent some officials. Here is an extract from email from Global Security(copied and pasted)...Good Luck all the Nepali brothers.--------- Re: Urgnet : Global Security

Hello,
You have contacted us in error as we are GlobalSecurity.org, not Global Security. We are a private research organization and we do not have any operations or staff in Baghdad or Iraq.

I am currently in BIAP (Baghdad Airport) working for Dept. of Defense. There are many
Nepalese working in the vicinity of Baghdad Airport inside many US camps. I meet and talk to them daily. They provide me
with Nepalese and Hindi CD's, movies, Sukuti, Khaini and so on. I do not how
reliable the news is because I have not heard anything about these Nepalese
being trapped without jobs nor have the other Nepalese laborers. I will try to
find out more tomorrow.

Thanks hakunaku (intresting name LOL) if you check www.nepalnews.com there is an article on this case that I have posted above. I felt compelled to help our stranded brothers from Nepal because we all know what stakes they have gone through to get to a war torn country just so that they can provide a better life for their loved ones back home. I am very happy that you have responded to this post and that you are so close to the source of the incident. Please keep us updated. Thanks very much. Hope you also find out who caused this trouble and hand them to the authorities.
Amazing bro Thanks for your effort, you did get a response but all the places I spoke and e-mailed to havent relpied me but our HAKUNAKU bro is a nepalese from the Area and he will provide us with more info. But again bro your effort was very Noble. lets see how this situation progresses.

As I mentioned before, I come in contact with many Nepalese
workers mainly laborers in Iraq
and Kuwait.
Most of them are from small villages in Nepal.
They usually pay the agent about 2 lakhs (average) rupees. It takes them about
1 year, may be little more just to earn what they paid the agents. Most of them work in US military
camps as kitchen helpers, laundry services, and janitors. Some of them have been
here for 4-5 years without any leaves. They work 7 days a week, 12 hours
shifts. Their salaries are mere 300 – 600 dollars per month. They all have 2
years contract and after 2 years they can go home for vacation or quit. There
are also many prior Nepalese or Indian Army folks who work as security personnel
who earn about 800-2000 dollars a month by putting their life in danger. Some of
them who are fluent in English are also in the supervisor position and earn
about 1500 dollars a month. They have no medical facility and if they get
really sick, they end up going back to Nepal.
Their living condition is not as pleasant, as they all live in trailers with
very limited space.
With that being said,
the few Nepalese that were stranded in Baghdad
without jobs was true. I asked the few guys here. They said that happened about
a month and half ago. They also said that most of them have been sent back to Nepal
but few managed to get jobs somewhere else. I will try to find out more about
that later.
It is unfortunate that these agents in Nepal
take advantage of these poor people.

Thanks hakunaku bro......... I was really concerned because the news was posted very recently in Nepalnews and since that we have tried to contact many humanitarian agencies but none responded. Thanks for providing the information. The thing that surprises me is that you say it happened one and half month ago and for us it was fresh news...maybe it took long for the news to be spread but.....the news clearly says that 300 nepalese are stranded and are guarded by 40 iraqi guards and arent even allowed to use the toilets around and were given two pieces of bread to live in a dangerous street outside with no cover and easy targets. The news also mention two names Nagendra Puri and Chiranjivi Sharma ..they are supposed to be in Iraq ...he ows some money to the hotel owner so he didnt allow Nepali workers even though they had contracts. Please Inform us more and please keep in touch and thanks for all you help bro.

The news is a very sad one. God please help these people.
But it surprises me, how come these Nepalese wanted to be in Iraq for money as we all know that 12 Nepalese were killed about two years ago. Even Nepali government has barred anyone from going Iraq for work.
I don't really get this. People are ready to get killed over money. Are these people just illeterate / don't know what happened before? Or are these people real greedy? Are we really in that dire situation??
As Hakunaku noted, it takes more than a year just to pay off the debt they take to get there. The money that they are getting does not even seem any worth of the risk.
I don't know why Nepalese end up in a situation like this. It really saddens me.

Bro I dont either but Look at Nepal right now bro.........The situation of nepal is so bad that Jobs are hard to come and even if you have one all the bandha, chhaka jam and all the strikes these leaders command. it hurts an honest man trying desprately to feed their families and the LURE by these agencies are also the main reason...they dont announce the dangers but show the money that can be earned. Do you know that Nepals population is 27 million in which 7 million and more unaccounted are working in foreign lands..I recently read that somewhere and I forget where....Ill try to find out. But my point is in NEPAL THERE IS NO STABILITY and everyone wants a ticket out. Its sad but true and many will take advantage of this crisis to leave the country. Yes Iraq is a war torn country but Nepal isnt that safe either now a days and is heading towards civil war if things doesnt get better. I love Nepal and I love our NEPALIPAN...its unique and now its being destroyed bro. You know what kills me the most. THE DISRESPECT WE GET BY INDIANS and being the 13th ranked poorest people in the world.....I feel so bad. It is up to us to change that image............Hongkong was a mere fishing village just 100 yrs ago and now look at it.......that wasnt long ago. WE can transform Nepal too so our brothers wont have to risk their lives to go abroad when the will be able to provide in their own country..................
