I think they usually renews the TPS after 18 months expiration. The situation back home will hardly improve in 18 months. Even if it goes back to normal like pre earthquake, they are way low per US standards and is still deemed vulnerable. So liklelyhood that this could be renewed for 36 or 54 months or even more? Further it is in US intetest to grant such thing to Nepalese being neighbor to China. Just my opinion.

Seems like people are confused a lot....
Just because US DHS approved TPS for Nepal doesnot make all Nepalese on TPS by itself. Any nepalese wanting to be in TPS should apply for it and get granted by USCIS. You can also apply for EAD while applying for TPS to work legally in US.
Once you are granted a TPS, you are no longer F1, h1, illegal or whatever status you were in before you got TPS. You are now on TPS.
If you want to travel outside US while on TPS, you should apply for travel authorization. Only after you get travel authorization approval, you can travel and come back as TPS. Your return to US is at the discretion of immigrantion officer at port of entry.
People staying illegally should consult with lawyers before travelling outside even on TPS.
During TPS, one can apply for F1, H1 or any other status.

@Piika I definitely do not think it is a good idea to go to Nepal and not do stamping and come back to US using TPS. Since you do not use your H1B for the re-entry, from what I've understood you would lose your h1b status. So even if you apply for TPS, I would recommend apply and use your h1b visa for reentry.

Nope, just speculation based on website from Senator from New York. Nothing is official yet, and no one knows for sure.

TPS is still under review as per DHS, but when Senators and lawyers are confident that TPS is on its way, we have nth to worry about as long as Senator isn't fooling around in this grave matter... In my opinion USCIS could take as much time as they want but its happening. It could be announced as soon as next week or as late as July, just keep those $515 cheque ready for DHS.

http://www.blumenthal.senate.gov/newsroom/press/release/after-blumenthals-request-dhs-grants-temporary-protected-status-to-nepalese-families-whose-visas-have-expired-and-cannot-safely-return-due-to-earthquake

Here is word officially (Not in USCIS website)

(Hartford, CT) - U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) today announced that, after his push, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nepalese nationals currently residing in the United States. After the devastating earthquake in Nepal, Blumenthal urged the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to grant TPS, a temporary benefit aimed at providing relief to foreign nationals in the United States whose country has been devastated by natural disaster or civil strife. This designation allows Nepalese nationals, already in the country, to stay in the U.S. for a set period of time while their home country recovers. In response to past natural disasters, the U.S. has extended TPS to Honduras, Nicaragua and Haiti.

So, from what I understood, those in valid F and H visas cannot maintain their visa and TPS simultaneously. They will not have the previous non immigrant visa when they get approved for TPS.
