Private VPC are so damn expensive for even a small scale Java project. So thinking about getting a small server and hosting at home. Is anyone hosting their project on home server? Mind sharing some ideas / experiences?

Try bitbucket or github. Both are free.

mojaboy, http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javaee/documentation/javaee7sdk-readme-1957703.html#System_Requirements Can not use shared hosting. I need min ~1GB RAM when idle and ~2GB when there are ~50 concurrent users. It involves some image handling and some complex queries. Currently I am using 2GB RAM with digitalOcean.com. its 20/month, not so expensive. but I am trying to add couple more apps on it. Its running Apache tomcat, apache http server and mySql. fuckeetow, I am talking about application hosting, not the code repository. I already use bitbucket as it provides private repository unlike github.

I had RaspberryPi Home Server. Runs Ok for simple stuff. I was able to run a LAMP stack pretty smoothly. I was pretty much using for testing purpose nothing for Production Use. For network you need to punch a hole through your router to access the port. One issue I had was related with dynamic IP, for which every time your ISP reassigns you new IP , you need to modify your DNS entry.
