My mother was granted visitor visa. I did not sponsor her. I am a US citizen, not sure if that makes any difference.

@ Thin beast, in that case, these days US embassy discourages any document. However, you can draft a letter of invitation stating the case why you want to invite and provide a financial supporting document that would convince them that you have sufficient funds to have your parents until they are here. That should work. I did the same too...

for visitors visa, you dont need a thing!! its clearly wriiten in us embassy website. i just had my mom and mother in laws visa without submitting a thing. no worries at all. just let them know the purpose of visit during interview. while point of entry in immigration, you can provide them a simple invitation letter
