I am sure even if he is guilty in this case, he would be able to bounce back after serving his time, if need be. And also Nepalese people have been very forgiving if we look at the history when the guilty have indulged in some sex offenses and try to re-exist. I recall some names such as Prakash Ojha, Namrata Shrestha. They are there quite well and rocking right? Yes some people who could not take the shame, cut their lives short example actress Jessika Khadka, Shrisha Karki and may be others. It also depends on how much you can bear.
Well, these things have been going on since time memorial, but now with technology, it is more evident and out there.
He should not lose hope so much now, if it really has happened. Just accept the truth and move forward rather than stalling the whole process.

@Bennedict - most of the things you said are true. Nepalese people and even the media is not as tough as the rest of the world.

However, at the end of the day - it's the person who has to face himself and once the reality hits him, I guess that's when he either falls down hard or amends and pick it up from there. No matter what you do - you will never be able to hide from yourself.

edv2023,
I agree maybe 100% bounce back may not look viable, but with people, his fans wanting to see him play and bring so much respect to the country, they can give him a second chance, right? Look how much people are wanting to see Paul Shah back again. He will get work after he gets out of jail, right? Prakash Ojha is still singing and Namrata is still playing movies and making news with her ever-changing boyfriends and all. Regarding her depression and suicide attempts, what can I say, there are repercussions to every thing that we do in life now, and some last quite long some cost life, what can I say?
Well, personally if you ask me, these celebrities should have done something better and nicer with the platforms and reach they have gotten, but well they did not. They say, "When you have a mike, say something nice", but not everybody follows that. I think we as an audience should also move on and let people accept their mistakes and work to make amendments right? Look Bollywood has accepted Sunny Leone and let her work there?

There is a difference. Namrata’s case is between two consenting adults. Her life her choice. Of course not fair to that DJ’s wife but there is no abuse here.

In case of Paul and Sandeep, relationship with a minor is an offense. So they both need to be persecuted to the full extent of the law.

@Chicagoan,
Well, I was basically talking about the overall sex scandals and not the abuses or who was abused in those scandals. But I buy your arguments, yes what happens between the two consenting adults is their business and not ours.
But because I come from a background where I believe in keeping our morals and heads high and not indulge in something that is unacceptable to our society, I still consider what Namrata did was immoral and irrational and it was her choice, her life! Nobody got abused physically here but if you look closely, there is a big abuse of friendship between two opposite genders and abuse of trust the wife had on her husband. Namrata knowingly was hooking up with a married man and that too on camera. How insane can it get? It was a full blown extra marital affair!! A home got wrecked here, come on! I can never have empathy for anybody who is knowingly indulging in such things. Had she been cheated in to this (the sex and then filming) maybe I would have some other opinion, but spare me in this case.
But now this is a past thing, and we everybody have our lapses of judgment, I do not want to ruin my peace of mind thinking about her case. She has her rights to do what pleases her. She has moved on, and we should too, right?
Live and let live.
B.

People in nepal need to know how to draw line between minor (kids) and adult and start running away with any conversation with kids (under 18). There is nothing wrong with law to protect minor from predatory behavior.

It’s probably not a new thing and had probably happened many times in past. But Nepalese society has changed and parents/women are more willing to take a fight for these predatory behavior.

Regardless of minor gave consent or not, this is predatory behavior and I am sure he has done this to others. He needs to be punished to full extent of law regardless of this status.

After coming out depending on when , which might be 10 years if victims stick to their stand ,he might not be much of player any more . I see quite a screwed up life for him, because of his predatory behavior and probably thinking he can get away with these because of his status. Especially in the context that he was in relationship and had girlfriend too.

"Useless laws weaken the necessary laws"
- Charles-Louis De Secondat Montesquieu

There are some basic questions that need to be asked first:
- Was the assumed victim's body biologically not developed enough to withstand a sexual encounter?
- Were her clothes torn and/or skin bruised?
- Was she drugged or was it simply a date-rape that other mammals have been engaging in for millions of years?
- Was she forcefully dragged into the Ho-tel room?
- Did she not find the expensive outing and dining not up to expectation?
etc.

This video contains perspectives both from a man and a woman:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVY7v2PLq48

( One of the issues with modern Nepalese in and outside Nepal is that there are way too many with educational knowledge but few with common sense. For example, if you observe urban infrastructure development in Nepal nowadays, you can see them modeled on those around sprawling American suburbia. That solution is akin to trying to fit a square peg into a round hole because our hilly country just does not have vast expanse of land suitable for developing new real estate sites thus have to encroach on existing farmlands prone to annual Monsoon floods. Moreover, not every solution offered by Western Capitalistic society can replace practices we inherited from our ancestors. )

Laws are there to protect commoners. Just because kids are physically ready doesn’t mean they are to be taken advantage by the men with status, wealth, power and position. This is exactly what predators do. They use wealth , nice dinner , hotels , clothes, promises of better career or marriage to convince kids for sexual encounters. This is very definition of a abuse of wealth/status and predatory behavior. And is this very reason laws exist to protect kids from.

At one point practice like,  forcing women to die when their husband died , marrying kids when they are berely 8/9 years old was being done for thousands of years and was legal, doesn’t mean it was right. With changes in society changes in laws and practices are needed. And this kind of law is needed in current society to protect commoners kids.

Now what that we consider when kids can make reasonably informed decisions on their own is debatable. Different country and society does this differently. In Canada I think it’s 16 , US generally 18, in nepal it’s 18 right now. But there has to be some line. And I personally think 18 is about right age. I do believe there has to be some variation in law depending on age of defendant and age difference between victim and defendant.

This is kind of law are created to protect those who are vulnerable due to rapid chance in their life and their mental maturity . Also tool given for patents to make sure they have ability to punish predators who try to take advantage of their kids immaturity by using wealth, power and status. The burden of being responsible and thoughtful is not on kids but are on those who are adults and considered symbols of society.

It’s understandable that’s kids don’t become immature to mature in one month between their 17y 11 month age and 18 yrs . But line has to be drawn and it his burden to stay away until that age is reached.

Meraj you have summed it up so perfectly! I could not have said it any better even if I had tried.

Benedict, your judgement on Namrata. Would you have said the same thing if she was a man? Everyone remembers Namrata’s sex scandal and calls her home wrecker and even worse things. But no one says anything about people like Bhuwan KC who wrecked the home of Pradhan guy by having an affair with his wife and many of other escapades Bhuwan KC has over the years. And there are many more men like that who we conveniently forget. But of course we remember Namrata. Only difference is, she is a woman. I am not saying Namrata is a Sati Sabitri but your measuring scale is tilted against her.

@Chicagoan,
I am aware about Bhuwan KC and his escapades that he was intermingling with. Ever since I gained understanding about the way things are, I had been reading Bhuwan KC as a playboy, womanizer and what not. Most probably, many relationship he was indulging around those time when technology was not so rampant like now, just went unnoticed. I agree. I am biased towards him as well just like in Namrata's case. He is a pure "boka" and to make it easier for him and needs, women kept falling for his antics and most of them of his age and younger probably still do. How can we forget he got married 2-3 times, right? He has been a home wrecker too most probably, but the major difference between his case and Namrata's case I would say is the proof that is saved for posterity to see. Namrata's sex video might live out our grandkids' generation, but as far our knowledge go, we have not come across any such documentations of Mr. Bhuwan's liaisons. Most of the talks are just talks and yes that beating/ slapping he got from the husband of the wife he was driving around with, which got reported quite infamously.
Yes, there are many more Nepali men like that who are into all this. I do not deny. Like the "rumor" was that Rabi Lamichane had some extra marital affair with Karishma Manandhar while they were in US (?). I do not know for sure now. But let me make it clear to you. I do not remember Namrata because she is a woman like you have assumed there. This is an understatement. I remember her and her scandal because she set a bad precedent for everyone in the virtual world, especially being a Nepalese woman with so much potential in the acting world. Come on, I used to praise her beauty and her work and always hoped she would make it big in the movie world, and this scandal happened. I felt DISGUSTED to the core!! It was such a disrespect to her fans! And you still feel there was no "abuse". You kidding me? It is just a frigging travesty "people" like Namrata walk around with saying oh I belong to this level and that league and at the end of the day she behaved like some under educated girl who entered the Nepali movie world just to embarrass everyone by her cringeworthy dispositions.
Again I iterate, Nepalese people and media are just so forgiving that they let people to co-exist and work for their livelihood. Look at our neighbor, India. After all these "Metoo" stories broke up. they have not still forgiven people like Sajid Khan, or Vikas Bahl and let them work though they have already proven their mettle in one way or the other. Well, Namrata, Prakash Ojha, Bhuwan KC are still working and entertaining people, we as Nepalese are way forward in letting things go. I let it go too, but I will always be biased towards these people I named above. How can we forget some girl killed herself after years of depression as in Prakash's case, or some family got wrecked as in Bhuwan KC's case or a wife was cheated really badly (for everyone to see, that too) in Namrata's case. They may be doing really good work of late, but my biasness will always prevail and I would not prefer anybody from my family follow these people really and discover their sordid "past". Spare me here please. There are far better things to read and follow than these people really. I cannot put some things in the back just easily like we say. I am just a human.
B.

The current laws were drafted by people with degrees who have got really good at COPY-PASTE rather than thinking through all encompassing aspects of any given social issue in a unique setting. So such legislations are prone to inadequacies- plus these laws are made-up.  Anyway, now that the laws are here, they ALSO needs to PROSECUTE :
- that accusing female for calculating to entrap the accused, Mr. Lamichhane, unless the courts can prove that any individuals under-18 are above the law. ( Remember, one of the individuals who was an accomplice in the D.C. sniper attacks that claimed 17 human lives and terrorized the entire Washington Dc area? That individual was under 18 years of age at the time and his name was Lee Boyd Malvo).
- the parents of the accusing female for Child Endangerment/Neglect as they passed the conservatorship of their child to a profit-making enterprise called a "hostel".
- the management personnel of the hostel for dropping the ball on fiduciary conservatorship of the accusing child.

In Paul Shah's case, the court had awarded the said victim Rs 10,00,000 which is a strong incentive for more under-18 female to trap other men, thus need to STOP such Monetary Awards to accusing victim or their family.

Our society needs to prevent social issues (misdemeanors or felonies) from happening in the first place through sensible laws without apparent incentive-based loopholes. Otherwise, we are going to evolve into a very litigious society (does that ring a bell?). That, in turn, will give rise to non-productive resources such as lawyers, police, and prisons (both public or private) that devour huge chunk of state funds.

On the contrary, if we decide that punishment for crimes is the only way by blindly emulating other countries without doing a thorough study on our unique situation and possible consequences, then we have a lot of catching up to do on incarceration rate as shown below:
* Rate is number incarcerated per 100,000 population 2022
United States 629
Nepal               85
(Source : https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/incarceration-rates-by-country)

In fact, the US prison system is so overcrowded due to lack of resources, some states are now implementing bail-reform laws that unleash yet-to-be-reformed convicts and violent suspects into the streets. Prison systems do not reform inmates - probably harden them instead.

I have to rest my case somewhere, preferably here.

It’s simple. Don’t go into a hotel room alone with an underage person. Why would people like Purna Shah and Sandeep hangout in a hotel room alone at night with a girl who is not even 18? Their intentions are also not clean. So, justice will be served if both Purna Shah and Sandeep are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
