Rebels abduct 10, send into ‘labor detention’

SANKHUWASABHA, Oct 15 - In a yet another violation of the ceasefire code of conduct, Maoists abducted 10 youths, including a former rebel cadre, from various villages in the district recently.

Those abducted include Dev Raj Katuwal, one time village people's government "chief", Chandra Bahadur Bhandari, Bikram Subba, the latter's youngest brother and one other person, from Kharang village.

They were abducted on a charge of beating up a local Maoist cadre, Bhim Bahadur Raut. Raut had reportedly roamed the village in an inebriated state before being thrashed by the youths.

Similarly, the rebels also abducted Arjun Neupane, Raj Limbu, both of Khandbari, and Bishnu Rai and Bikash Rai of Pathibhara. Bal Bahadur Karki of Aakhibhui-8 was also forcibly taken away by the rebels.

Neupane, Rai and Limbu were abducted on the charge of being involved in a fight during a bingo game while Karki was taken into rebel control for beating up his father. According to Aakrosh, a local leader of the rebel outfit, all those abducted were sent into the Maoists' "labor detention".

Meanwhile, the wife of Karna Bahadur Thapa of Rampur Thoksila-2, Udayapur district, has appealed to journalists and human rights activists for the immediate and safe release of her husband, who was captured by the rebels a week ago.

Organizing a press meet, she urged the rebels to release Thapa even for just a few days, as one of their sons was seriously ill and had to be taken to Siliguri, India for treatment.

The rebels have accused Thapa, a former district committee member of the Maoists, of embezzlement and of "committing cultural crime".

However, Thapa, talking over the phone from Maoist captivity, pleaded that he was innocent and was ready to undergo any kind of punishment if found guilty.
