We are looking to adopt a child from Nepal and are seeking some advice from people who have been through the same. We know that going through an agency is very costly and time consuming. We were thinking of directly going to Nepal and adopting from an orphanage.
Does anyone have similar kind of experience or suggestions about the possibilities of doing so? What immigration obstacles would we face? Is our current status going be a hindrance? (My spouse is a citizen and I am a Green Card holder). Would it help if both of us are a U.S. citizen?
We would really appreciate if someone could guide us through the entire process or provide suggestions.

I know this thread has been years ago, but we are just not sure how to proceed. Online informations and search does not lead to much. We are also planning to go to Nepal directly and adopt from there.
@ Bacchi - by this time you must have already adopted. What was the process and how long did it take it for you. If you could share your experiences, we would highly appreciate it.
@RajaHarischandra: Can you also share your experience here please.
Or, anybody else, who has gone through this process or knows someone who went through the similar process. Thank you so much

I have seen many Nepali kids adopted by white Americans and the few who I have talked to, all went through agency. It was expensive and took 5-6 years average.

I am not an expert but I think you might (might) be able to avoid the agency in America and avoid some fees but you will have to know all the paperwork. It might not be worthy. You will have to deal directly with the State Department and the Homeland Security. Avoiding agencies in America and Nepali means you will have to prove to both the government that the kid that you want is indeed an orphan and that it is not a child for sale. It is a huge deal. Nepal might not care much but the US government is very strict about it. Few years ago, adoption from Nepal was banned cause of some stories of Nepali agency selling kids. I am not even sure if the US has lift the ban. Check it yourself.

If you think you can go to Nepal and pick up and kid and bring him/her here with little effort and little money, then you are far from the reality. It is NOT that easy regardless of your status here.
Again, I am not an expert in this, just my 2 cents.
