Madhesh needs to be taken into confidence before reviewing 1950 treaty: TMLP chief
Terai-Madhesh Loktantric Party (TMLP) chairman Mahantha Thakur said that Madhesh should be taken into confidence before making any decision regarding the Indo-Nepal 1950 Peace and Friendship Treaty.
"Prime Minister Prachanda had held discussion with us on the issue before leaving in his India visit. But he needed to assure us that Madhesh would be taken into confidence before making any decision regarding the treaty," Thakur said while speaking at a press meet organised by Madhesh Journalists Society, Parsa in Birgunj Wednesday.
India has already agreed for a review of the Treaty during PM Dahal visit there a week ago.
The Madhesi leader, who formed TMLP immediately after leaving Nepali Congress when the Madhesi movement was at its peak, said that the people of Madhesh have not been able to fully trust, as what he called, "the ruling class" since the past understandings and agreements done with Terai-centric parties were not implemented.
He also said that the state needs to immediately initiate dialogue with the armed outfits operating in Terai, bring them in the mainstream of national politics and end the violence and lawlessness in the region.
"Although the two factions of the United Madheshi Democratic Front, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum and Nepal Sadbhawana Party have joined the government, but on the issue of minimum demand of Madhesh TMLP including the two other parties are unanimous," Thakur said, adding that his party would continue to struggle for Madhesi rights both from the Constituent Assembly and the streets. nepalnews.com ag Sep 24 08
