Hello everybody,

I worked from March 2008 to September 2008 in my OPT and now in H1B visa. From the starting of my job, I am paying 25% tax and it same as my status changed to H1B. The 25% tax does not include SSN benefits and Medicare taxes. One of my friend said that while working in OPT the tax should be about 17% and later (when H1B starts) that will increase with addition of SSN benefits and Medicare taxes. But I paid 25% tax in my OPT period which even does not include SSN benefits and Medicare taxes. If anybody had similar situation before or has information about this issue, please share. I would also like to know how I can get refund of my extra cut. I will appreciate your answers. Thank you!

No worries.........There is no exact deducation % in the paycheck. It all depends upon various factors like, single or married, childrens, payrate, payamount, ur dependent, and many more.....

During OPT, there is not SSN and medicare tax . While in H1-B you have to pay these taxes. In few state, there is income Tax in top of it. The higher you make, the deductible % goes up. A person who makes 1000 in 2 weeks might have 100 as tax, BUT person who makes 3000 biweekly will have more than 3000 tax cut.

Anyway, all these should not matter, You will get all the tax return that you paid in excess at the end of the year. If you want less tax cut , just increase the dependent claimed. Put it 5, you can go upto 10 or 8 I think.

But, rember, you might end up paying at the end of the year, if u have paid less.

Hello

I was in F1 Visa and started my OPT. In OPT you pay only Federal and State Taxes, We are exempted from Social Security and Medicare Taxes.

In my university, they recommended us to http://www.VisaTaxes.com

They specialize in tax preparation for visa holders in the United States.

Hope it helps!
