Saw a post about Nepali political leaders over the base of Mt. Everest doing some publicity stunt meeting (PR). just wondering if these so called leaders or nepali people know about one of the greatest hoax, also known as Climategate.

I do not know it is a hoax or not. Some say it is a hoax and some say it is science. However, we (nepali) are taught from our childhood that global warming is real. We never tried becoming critical about any thing. We just say like " Scientists say that, so it is real". "Man reached to the moon" we repeat multiple times. But we never learned to be critical about things. We were never taught to raise questions like " Did man really reach the moon?", or Is global warming man made?
I think Nepali people fully believe that global warming is man made, man reached moon and so on because main stream media are saying that.

It is true that we're not taught to be critical. How does scientists say it? Everything said by main stream media is not based on truth. But I don't think the examples of global warming and moon landing fits here. There're crooks in every field.

Ignorance is a bliss Look not further than the glacial lakes of Nepal guys. If u wanna go further Look at the East Africa and North pole. It depends which data you rely on. I can easily think of a summerday where I didn't had do think of scorching sun. None of the home used to have a fan or AC. Now just realize what has become of that place and you still are doubting the fact.. In US there are lobbyist working to change each and every legislation as they want to make profit by status quo. Oil industry is active with it's own lobby and they can spend whatever amount needed to make a case for them from their angle. So don't get fooled by those studies (In US it is Republican Politics). Science is not always perfect but it always goes on to perfect itself. But who want to give a s**t about anything. Let's follow whatever is being said no matter whoever says. IGNORANCE, MY FRIEND, IS A BLISS. have a great time

holding a meeting by mount Everest = air travel carbon footprint = melts down the ice. Nepali leaders = carbon footprint = melting the whole country.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey, released Monday, indicates that two-thirds of all Americans believe global warming is a proven fact. That's down eight points since June of 2008, with views among Democrats holding steady while Republicans' belief in global warming dropping 11 points.

"The growing skepticism among Republicans, with no matching shift among Democrats, suggests that the changes measured in this poll may be a reaction to having a Democrat in the White House rather than a shift in underlying attitudes toward global warming,"

Climate Change is as real as your blood travelling in viens and arteries right now. It is as real as your brain is active while your pupils are scanning these sentences right now. However, why and how did it happen? CFC's and deforestation coupled with exponential human growth are the major culprits. We CFC's in various products such as refrigerants, aerosols and solvents. It is made up flourine, carbon and chlorine. Flourine is okay as far as the danger goes but chlorine and carbon hae adverse effects. Carbon adds to greenhouse effect that leads to global warming. And chlorine is bad for the ozone sheild. One chlorine molecule can eat 1000 ozone mols thus thinning the protective layer and as a result we have a big ozone hole over the Antartics. Tropical rainforests are vanishing rapidly. Studies report that forests about the size of Florida are lost every day. What are the consequences? Tropics are considered lungs of earth. They purify air. Plus, the carbon stored in the trees are released into the env. adding more to the greenhous effect. Not to mention, we get pollution from the logging activity and wildlife becomes endangered. Exponential human growth-India, China, Bangladesh, Most African countries (Nigeria having the highest birth rate, 7%) amd other poor countries including Nepal (2.19%- ~ 30 miilion in 147,000 sq km-that's too much). Every additional human is burden to the env. and with the current rate of gowth, it is possible that by 2025, earth will reach its carrying capacity. And the worse thing is, developed countries are the principle drivers of climate change and US did not even sign the Kyoto Protocol-ironical. However, they are buying carbon permits. REDUCE, RECYCLE and REUSE - REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT.

Well global warming is man made,
Then I have one simple question for all you expert, why we had higher tempertaure than today in geological past? or why we had cycles of temperature fluctuation in geological past when there was nothing called human?

I was very amazed to see almost half of the people not believing in climate change in today's CNN's poll. Then, occasionally we bump into people like you.
Let me attempt to answer if it will help to answer your query.
These are probably termed as anomalies and there're probably many theories explaining these anomalies. Certainly, the things that happened during that time were non-human phenomena. But do you believe that humans can not bring these large scale things to happen? Let's not talk like the greek god's explanation for the weather system. Should we say that diseases spreading and all other current environmental mess is also not from man-made because these environmental disasters occurred during the era when there were no human?
Do the opponents of climate change have the alternate theory for the current temperature of planet earth?
Do you deny that greenhouse gases keep us warm here? Do you deny that CO2 is greenhouse gas? Do you deny that CO2 is increasing from last 250 years? Do you deny that man-made sources contribute to the large chunk of CO2 sources? Do you deny that CO2 increase and temperature increase plots match? Do you challenge EPA's recent decisions to include CO2 as pollutant? Do you deny the fact that 90s were warmer than 80s and the current decade was the warmest period ever recorded? Do you deny that glaciers and all ice pieces are melting because of temperature rise?

arahat, i don't deny that human activities is also contributing to global warming, however, i strongly oppose that this is the main cause of global warming. the earth is going to witness another period of global warming whether human do some contributing activites or they don't do anything, this is going to happen anyway, so my suggestion is only that before we conclude big model of climate change we need to know and include all possible variables that can play role, and there is a big group of people whose job is always making this kind of big issue of little things. and i am not telling any fairy's tale, this is my field where i am working for 10 yrs. just analyze the figure i have posted above and google for the possible reasons behind this and if you don't get anything on that then i will tell you about that and Namaskar, i just used that link to download the picture as google gave me that site on my first hit. i can give you hundreds of reference on this. and lastly novaguy83 you better do your own job, at least i don't need your suggestion on what i need to do

Human activities are the major cause for the increase in CO2 emissions which causes global warming. Somebody opposing this won't change the simple fact. There may be many causes for global warming, but we know for sure the main dominant current cause is from CO2 emissions and we've the capability to do something about it. Global warming going to happen anyway so we should stop taking any preventive actions is like telling to stop taking care of your health because you're going to die one day anyway. The story you put definitely is a fairy tale which is believed by a handful of people in the scientific community and most of them are backed by oil industries with their hidden agendas. If you think that overwhelming majority of scientists, who believe in global warming based on science and facts, are trying to blow it up, I guess I don't have anything to say.
As I said, there may be many reasons for climate anomaly in the past. But the one we're facing right now is because of our own activities and we can not and should not run away from our responsibilities by bringing digressions such as calling all of the scientists as propagandists or showing the past records to prove that we should put our hands in pockets doing nothing.
letsplaygolf, do you think paying the corrupted leaders so that they can have vacation with their family in copenhagen is the solution? Did you read the following news?

if you don't want to listen others, don't want to explore the reasons behind any happening and simply deny others' argument by saying fairy's tale then I also have nothing to say. You don't have answers what were the causes of global warming in the past and then you simply came with the conclusion that human activites is the major cause of global warming in present without knowing whether those causes which had the major roles in the past are acting in present or not? What a great scientific way of drawing conclusion! It looks like whatever you know is science and whatever you don't know is not science. I don't say we shouldn't do anything to reduce CO 2 emission human activities. But I don't think it is that major you need to send eight ministers for the meeting on this issue.

I didn't say that I don't want to explore and not know about it. If you have the answers in quantified terms, let the modelers know, and I'm sure that they'll give you enough credits for it. I don't know the reasons in the past; actually I don't know a lot and a lot of things, and so is in science. Every study and every conclusions drawn whether it be the experiment or model have many uncertainties. But do you think it'd be wise to be stubborn saying that I won't implement the conclusions unless all the uncertainties are explained and included? Regarding paleo data, we can't say whether it's CO2 or not because the data don't exist, and even if it exists, it's non-human activities. But today we can quantify emissions from human and non-human activities and can relate it to the quantity we observe today and can also quantify how much temperature increase it can cause or being caused by human or non-human activities. That is the basis for saying that human activities are the main reason behind it.
Regarding sending 8 ministers, I already stated and also agree with you that it's a big waste of money by the poor nation.

*I am positive when I say, I will never be able to fully understand the true meaning of global warming, who is causing it (if), when do you get to say global warming?.... and so on...
*What I am concerned about is the pollution! Why the puck cant we just say, pollution is bad, and we need to take steps to control it! Pucking global warming is losing its grouns here and elsewhere.
*Do what you can to reduce pollution. If you are at a position where you can influence others, please do so too!
Pollutions Suxs Ballzz!! Global Warming still a mystery to me!

Ministers being at base of mt. everest for whatever reason, is an example to world or to kinda alarm from ministers side to the world, since news will definatly come to media. other part Global warming used to be a hypothesis about 20-30 years ago. Scientist projected that if the pollutions and emissions of CFCs continues, global warming would start as a result of Ozone layer depletion. I do not wanna prove some obvious things, since winter is getting colder ( right now) and summers are getting warmer, glaciers are melting, polar bears need home, sea levels are rising and i am driving carbon emitter every single day and so do you guys. those things might be affecting or being affected in very minimum level but it will make difference in large volume and effects will be seen after certain period of time whether you believe or not. And we Nepalese, even myself in general believe it is bad luck when cat crosses the road when u are trying to go somewhere or empty utensils in the way out or sneezing or asking where u are heading out and other BS without any evidence. ( you guys also believe somewhere there in your heart even though you gonna bark, i do not believe in that Sheet)So y dont we start believing scientific facts and calling those superstitious beliefs as hoax. Making long story short, Global warming is happening but its effects are very low right now almost not detectable by general public. It might not affect our generation but our future generation will blame us for all this crap and humans might need gills to survive. Probably after couple decades or more, people will start working on the problem which gonna be too late.
